The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) met recently to reevaluate the use of atrazine. Gerald Simonsen, a grower from Ruskin, NE and Chairman of the National Sorghum Producers told ALL AG, ALL DAY that the work of EPA seems to be coming on the heels of a renewed campaign by environmental activists to ban the use of all herbicides and pesticides. Simonsen said that atrazine is one of the most studied chemicals in agriculture’s tool-chest. He also reminded that use of atrazine has declined over the last ten years and that with it’s chemistry, it remains a safe and effective option for controlling weeds in corn, sorghum and sugarcane.
