Beef Stocks Tighten While Turkey Inventories Keep Building

WASHINGTON, DC – Frozen beef and pork inventories declined entering August while turkey stocks continued to build, highlighting different supply conditions across the meat complex. USDA reports beginning August beef stocks at 382.7 million pounds, down 1.6% from July and 8.6% from March.

Pork stocks fell 3.4% from July to 439.4 million pounds. Broiler inventories were nearly unchanged at about 718.1 million pounds.

Turkey moved sharply in the opposite direction. Frozen turkey stocks reached 406.7 million pounds entering August, up 4.5% from July and nearly 60% from March.

Lower beef inventories reinforce the tighter supply environment created by reduced cattle slaughter and lower beef production. Pork supplies remain comparatively larger, while expanding turkey inventories could increase seasonal marketing pressure.

Cold storage levels can shift quickly as production, exports and domestic demand change. Producers and meat markets will be watching whether beef stocks continue tightening and whether turkey inventories begin drawing down ahead of fall demand.

Farm-Level Takeaway: Tightening beef stocks support firm supply fundamentals, while rapidly building turkey inventories could create different price pressure heading into fall.
