NASHVILLE, TN – U.S. dairy production showed year-over-year gains in June, according to the latest Monthly Dairy Products Report from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Total cheese production (excluding cottage cheese) reached 1.20 billion pounds, up 4.2% from June 2024, though down 3.9% from May 2025.
Italian-type cheese production was 509 million pounds, a 5% increase over last year. American-type cheese production rose 4.8% year-over-year to 473 million pounds but fell 7.1% from the previous month.
Butter production reached 185 million pounds in June, 10.4% higher than a year earlier, though 12.5% below May levels.
Among dry milk products, nonfat dry milk rose 9.6% to 140 million pounds, while skim milk powder fell 21.7%. Whey product output saw modest year-over-year growth, including whey protein concentrate (up 4.8%) and lactose (up 1.9%).
Frozen product trends were mixed. Regular hard ice cream production declined 3.9%, and low-fat ice cream dropped 2.1%. Sherbet rose 6.8%, while frozen yogurt dipped slightly by 0.8%.
Overall, the report indicates stronger dairy production compared to June 2024, despite month-to-month declines in several key categories.
