AI Moves From Farm Data To Machine Decisions

MILWAUKEE, WI – Artificial intelligence is moving deeper into agricultural equipment, shifting from post-season data analysis toward real-time decisions involving steering, machine settings, spraying, maintenance, and autonomous operation, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers.

AEM groups agricultural AI into three levels: Assist, Advise, and Act. Assist-level systems support tasks such as guidance and implement control, while advise-level systems provide recommendations. Act-level systems can execute defined decisions with limited operator input.

Practical applications include predictive maintenance, in-cab harvest guidance, and targeted spraying. Machine vision can identify weeds and control individual nozzles, potentially reducing chemical use and input costs while improving documentation and traceability.

AEM also says many systems are designed to operate directly on the machine instead of relying entirely on cloud connections, helping maintain reliability where rural internet service is limited.

The industry group says AI can help address labor shortages, narrow operating windows, and equipment downtime, although the paper does not provide independent farm-level return-on-investment data.
