Congress Considering Multiple Climate Solutions Utilizing Agricultural Practices

WASHINGTON, DC – Last week the Senate Agriculture Committee passed the Growing Climate Solutions Act on a bipartisan and unanimous vote. That bill now heads to the Senate floor for further consideration. At the same time, a Democratic but bicameral approach is being considered as Rep. Chellie Pingree from Maine and New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich introduced the Agriculture Resilience Act. The legislation would set a number of environmental targets for the agriculture sector to reach by the year 2040, including net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reach those goals, the legislation would bolster climate research and outreach, increase investments in on-farm energy production, reduce food waste, and support farming practices that build soil health and sequester carbon. Currently, the bill is looking for co-sponsors and bipartisan support.
