ARLINGTON, VA – How has the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic affected the dairy industry? According to the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), retail dairy purchases that jumped at the beginning of the pandemic, have remained elevated since then. Milk consumption also experienced gains across many categories. Buttermilk sales increased with the focus on at-home baking with both organic and conventional fluid milk purchases rising above year-before levels. What’s even more encouraging for milk producers is that milk sales experienced nearly $1 billion in growth compared to plant-based milk opportunities which saw sales increase to just 40 percent of that level.
