MEMPHIS, TN – With other crop alternatives holding better odds for profitability, the National Cotton Council (NCC) believes cotton acreage in the United States will fall 5.2 percent this year. The prediction is based upon the Council’s 40th Annual Early Season Planting Intentions Survey whereby cotton growers suggest their intention is to plant 11.5 million acres to the crop. Percentage-wise, the deepest declines come in extra-long staple (ELS) cotton where the NCC expects only 161-thousand acres nationally, down 21 percent from 2020. Upland cotton acres could see a 5 percent year over year decline as planting intentions suggest only 11.3 million acres planted domestically.
