WASHINGTON, DC – More cattle and calves were placed into U.S. feedlots last month than any other February since USDA started the monthly Cattle on Feed Report 22 years ago.

With 12.2 million head in feedlots with a capacity of at least 1,000 head, it represents a 1 percent increase over the same number on feed in 2021.

Placements, according to USDA, totaled 2 million head, equal to a 1 percent reduction from the same timeframe in 2021, while marketings slipped 3 percent to 1.77 million head and other disappearance totaled 64,000 head, a year over year increase of 14 percent.

For Texas, the top beef producing state in the country, 2.94 million head were on feed as of February 1, 2022 – up 1 percent from one year earlier as placements fell 4 percent and marketings increased 1 percent.
