GREELY, CO – Just one week after opening a new $68 million facility in Moberly, Missouri, a facility producing ready-to-eat, fully cooked bacon, JBS was struck by a ransomware attack Tuesday that shutdown 13 packing plants across the United States.
The attack, according to Forbes, appears to be linked to a Russian hacking group and comes on the heels of last month’s shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline by DarkSide, a relatively new criminal group believed to have roots in Eastern Europe.
Although Colonial paid out around $5 million in ransom money, it’s unclear whether JBS did the same.
JBS USA did, however, announce a full resumption of production at all of their facilities providing further assurance to more than 100,000 JBS USA and Pilgrim’s employees, livestock and poultry producers, customers, and consumers.
Company officials continue to maintain that there is no evidence at this time that any customer, supplier, or employee data has been compromised.
The White House on Wednesday rebuked the hackers and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop harboring criminals. Leaders of the two countries are preparing for the June 16th summit in Geneva.
