MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – Two weeks ago, the Mexican government lifted a deadline for banning imports of biotech corn for animal feed and industrial uses; however, the ban remains in place for GMO corn for human consumption.
The original decision from the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), included a phase-out from using and importing any genetically modified corn and other products by February 1, 2025.
Mexico is a significant buyer of United States corn, accounting for 27 percent last year in terms of volume, and roughly 20 percent of the nation’s food-grade corn is imported from farmers in the U.S. as well.
