BILLINGS, MT – A group of cattle producers, led by R-CALF USA, are asking USDA for a nationwide referendum on the Beef Promotion and Research Order, commonly known as the Beef Checkoff Program.
The petition calls on the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a referendum for an up or down vote on the termination of the Beef Checkoff and current law allows the Secretary to conduct a referendum if at least 10 percent of the nation’s cattle producers request the vote.
According to the petition, at least 88,269 eligible U.S. cattle producer signatures are needed to move forward. The deadline for receiving requests is July 1, 2021.
