LUBBOCK, TX – Small and mid-sized beef processors play a much larger role than simply harvesting cattle. USDA says maintaining those facilities is essential to supporting rural economies, preserving competition, and providing producers with additional marketing opportunities through local and regional supply chains.
Under Secretary Richard Fordyce says the new Strengthening Processing for U.S. Ranchers program, or SPUR, is designed to help federally inspected and qualifying state-inspected processors remain financially viable during a period of historically tight cattle supplies. Payments will be administered through USDA using federally inspected harvest data.
Fordyce says these facilities also support direct-to-consumer beef sales, branded beef programs, and regional marketing efforts that many cattle producers depend upon. Preserving both the processing plants and their skilled workforce helps maintain important infrastructure throughout cattle country.
USDA plans to contact eligible processors directly as payment calculations are completed, eliminating the need for applications through local county offices.
