Sustainability Message Reverberates at Virtual Beltwide Cotton Conference

LUBBOCK, TX – Sustainability took the main stage at Wednesday’s annual Beltwide Cotton Conference. Being held virtually due to COVID-19 concerns, Dr. Gary Adams, CEO of the National Cotton Council, opened a session by outlining the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol. He explained that the Protocol will bring a new standard for sustainably grown cotton using quantifiable and verifiable goals and measurements to cotton production. Leadership, Adams says, is what led the industry to make the proactive move toward defining and plotting the course for what will be recognized as sustainable production. A major concern was that if sustainability was to be defined by consumers, brands or retailers, or even government bodies (ie the European Union), then cotton producers would have no say in how to grow and cultivate cotton in the future.
