Texas Tech Breaks Ground on New Veterinary School

(AMARILLO, TX) After leaving West Texas A&M University in Canyon just over nine years ago for a new position with Texas Tech University, Dr. Guy Loneragan probably never thought he’d return to the Texas Panhandle. On Thursday however, he did. The epidemiologist and Professor of Food Safety and Public Health helped to break ground on a new School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo. The school will be located at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and is expected to enroll its first class in the Fall of 2021. For Loneragan, it’s a bit more personal. Not only has he been named dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine but he also developed much of the curriculum based upon a hands-on, residency-type from the University of Calgary. Earlier this year, the Texas Legislature appropriated $17 million for the facility to be used for operational needs as the school gets up and running. In addition, donors and civic leaders pledged more than $90 million toward infrastructure, construction, and scholarships for the first new vet school in Texas in over 100 years.
