U.S. Cotton Farmers Expecting Smaller Crop in 2021

MEMPHIS, TN – Last week, the National Cotton Council (NCC) released the results from their Annual Planting Intentions survey. The Council, based upon producer intentions, projects 2021 domestic acreage to be 11.5 million acres, a 5.2 percent decrease from 2020, based upon strong prices for competing for crops – mainly corn and soybeans. With abandonment assumed at 18 percent for the U.S., the expected harvest would total 9.4 million acres with a projected yield of 855 pounds per acre equal to a crop of 16.7 million bales. At the same time, however, the NCC projects U.S. cottonseed production to increase to 5.2 million tons this year.
