LUBBOCK, TX – USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden says federal officials are preparing additional action on fertilizer competition after farmers described alleged business practices that could be limiting new entrants and producer choice.
Vaden told the Agribusiness Report that farmers from 17 or 18 states attended a recent event in Ogden, Iowa, organized with state corn grower groups. Representatives from the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission also attended.
He said testimony included claims that potential competitors faced pressure when pursuing financing or business deals. Vaden said the event was intended to provide federal antitrust officials with additional evidence about fertilizer-market practices.
Vaden said announcements are expected in the coming weeks as USDA, the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department continue examining competition in fertilizer markets. He did not specify which companies or actions could be involved.
Farmers will be watching for whether federal enforcement changes fertilizer pricing, market access or supplier competition ahead of upcoming input purchases.
Farm-Level Takeaway: Federal scrutiny of fertilizer competition could affect supplier options and input costs as producers plan for the next crop year.
