Farm Disaster Aid Could Join Year-End Congressional Package

LUBBOCK, TX – Additional farm disaster assistance could become part of the year-end congressional debate as lawmakers consider unfinished agricultural legislation and other federal spending priorities.

Agricultural policy consultant Tom Sell says discussions have included a roughly $12 billion agricultural assistance package, with some consideration of expanding support beyond that amount. He says producers continue facing financial pressure from elevated production costs and market challenges.

Sell points to sticky input expenses during the 2026 production season, along with tariff-related disruptions and foreign competition that have pressured farm margins even as some commodity markets improve.

The congressional discussion is separate from the administration’s recently announced $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief effort targeting high diesel costs. Sell says some agricultural assistance is being pursued administratively while other support requires congressional action.

He expects disaster assistance, the Farm Bill and appropriations to compete for attention when lawmakers return for the year-end session.

Farm-Level Takeaway: Producers could see additional disaster assistance considered before year-end, but the final amount and legislative path remain unsettled.
